About Us:
The Clowvazar Academy is a K-12 private school, tutoring center, and hybrid homeschool program. Students take courses on campus and earn credits for those classes. Our campus mainly focuses on students with anxiety followed by Autism, ADD, ADHD and other learning struggles. We pride ourselves for being able to give our students access to one-on-one tutors that are ready to help your struggling student. We have the flexibility to meet your student's needs more quickly than an IEP or 504 plan in a public school.
Philosophy: "I Like You"
Education should largely be organized around reducing mental barriers to skill and knowledge acquisition -- this includes reducing anxiety, increasing noticing, participation and acquisition. These so-called affective filters should be paramount in driving our mission.
We feel that children should be first and foremost in an environment that values them and is attentive to their needs. The environment is a large contributor to anxiety, and a child’s anxiety is the largest barrier to education. Students need to be contributors to the social and scholastic environment of the school. Curriculum needs to match the diversity and adversity of our students.
Mission:
We aim to develop good world citizens. Emotional and social development is the foundation on which The Clowvazar Academy is built. Many of our students come to us with low self-esteem and virtually no friends. Their desire to participate in life and school can often be low. Social and emotional skills are paramount to developing a student into their happy, helpful and creative selves.
Only when we have that foundation set, can we build our upper layers. We aim to increase our student's understanding of the world and its interconnectedness by enriching their cultural understanding. Exposure to other cultures helps develop a sense of ethics by increasing empathy for others.
Through this process, we want our students to develop non-biased critical thinking skills.
All of these pieces come together to reach our final goals: employed, productive citizens of our planet that can contribute fearlessly. We must set our students up for their post-high-school lives. This may include college, trade school, internships or direct-to-work-force life.
Beliefs and Faith:
The Clowvazar Academy welcomes families of faith as well as secular families. We believe in creating a space where children can explore their beliefs while creating bridges between others. We teach tolerance of differences. We believe strongly that our programs should be a place without persecution of non-harmful differences. Our core faith is in truth, honesty and above all kindness to others. Our curriculum are designed to help our students uplift, develop and support their faiths (or lack of) while maintaining a level of respect for others. Staff are instructed to act as mediators and not indoctrinators. For secular and religious families, our school is a haven of peace, love and hope.
Testing: No Standardized Testing Required
The Clowvazar Academy does not endorse the use of standardized tests as a way of measuring or comparing our students. Standardized test have been shown to limit education, creativity and cause unnecessary anxiety. Instead, we use portfolio assessments as a practical and more broad way of measuring our students; this approach is commonly called “multiple measures” where class tests, quizzes, homework, projects, et cetera are used as a way of measuring our students.
Year-Round Schedule:
As we are a year-round school, we have one week off about every three to four weeks (with some exceptions). Our schedule is designed to address the regression that students often face during long summer breaks as well as the anxiety that a student may have if they are in school weeks on end. A year-round schedule helps our students stay focused, manage their anxiety and also helps keep them moving forward in their academics.
Curriculum:
We pride ourselves in how we have rethought education especially in the domains of English and History. Here, we divide history into more specific units that help students understand countries around the world from their perspectives. To that end, we teach history through an anthropological perspective. History is divided into regions such as African History (history on the African continent), Asian History, and South American History (covering the diverse native tribes as well as colonization). We learn that cultures are valid, their experiences are interesting and worthy of being known. In the domain of English, we require each student to master various essay types that serve as benchmarks for graduation.
